Vincente Riva Palacio was a Mexican politician and intellectual who happened to be the grandson of the great Mexican revolutionary and President Vincente Guerrero who won Mexico their independence. Palacio was widely respected during his time, helping to fight off the French intervention of Mexico during the mid-1860’s while also in later years adding to the intellectual prowess of Mexico. After his election to the Supreme Court of Justice from 1868–1870, he dedicated himself increasingly to writing. One of his most famous works in which he collaborated with Mexican archaeologist Alfredo Chavero and others was entitled México a través de los siglos (Mexico through the centuries). In this historical work Palacio and others acknowledge the Black indigenous presence in the Americas. It states the following:
