The Algonquin people otherwise known as the Lenape, are a group of indigenous people who speak the Algonquin languages. This linguistic stock, that formerly occupied a more extended area than any other in North America, reached from the eastern shores of Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains. The people who spoke this language were often described as short in stature and dark complexioned. For example, early explorer John Smith, famously encountered the Powhatans who were a part of the Virginia Algonquin speaking family and said this about their appearance and leader “Powhatan having disguised himself in the most fearful manner he could, caused Capt. Smith to be brought forth to a great house in the woods, and there upon a mat by the fire to be left alone. Not long after from behind a mat that divided the house, was made the most dolefullest noise he ever heard; then Powhatan more like a devil then a man with some two hundred more as black as himself.”

Linguistic-wise, the Algonquin languages are closely related to the Egyptian writing system. For example, the Mi'kmaq writing system that came from the Mi’Kmaq people who are part of the Eastern Algonquin family, according to Dr. Barry Fell, had an identical writing style to the Egyptians. Fell said “It (Mi’kmaq script) proved to contain hundreds of different hieroglyphic signs, a considerable proportion of which are clearly derived from, or even identical with, ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs or their hieratic equivalents … older people among the Indians at Oldtown, Maine, who remember a time when the writing was inscribed vertically, and also horizontally.”
